This Mikawa nagura is one of the four strata that are used in progression of fineness to hone straight razors and kamisori with Japanese natural stones. These stones are priced by both weight and grade.

What is a nagura grade? Tokkyu grade is striped and or colored while Betsu Jou grade is pure white. While all Mikawa nagura are fast cutting, Tokkyu grade is the most aggressive cutting grade. In contrast, Betsu Jou grade cuts steel more softly, less aggressively. Still, all grades of Mikawa naguras are superior stones for honing kamiosri and straight razors.

Who is Nagayuki Asano? These nagura have been evaluated by Nagayuki Asano and have the one and only official red colored Nagayuki Asano stamp for quality and authenticity assurance. Why is this important? Well, there are other naguras out there that are not real Mikawa naguras and come from a different mine. These naguras do not perform at the same level as Mikawa naguras. Real Mikawa naguras start cutting into the metal almost immediately and you begin to see black metal dust in the slurry. The naguras from other mines are poor performers and take much longer to start cutting into the metal. Mikawa naguras also have a better consistency with far less harmful inclusions. In addition, Mikawa naguras are broken down into precise grades. That is why these naguras are highly sought after and trusted. They are assured with both the red Nagayuki Asano stamp and the Authentic Pure White Mikawa Nagura stamp.
